When you call our offices, chances are you’ll talk to Margaret Rode. She started the company out of a drafty spare bedroom in 1998 after a career path through great organizations like Apple Computer, Hughes Aircraft, and Worldwide Partners. Why the detour? In living and working all over the world, she had volunteered for several small nonprofit organizations and had seen firsthand how people struggled to work social miracles with almost no resources at all. How they sweated bullets — and often sacrificed their own time and quality of life — to save the lives of a few abused kids, or to push back against companies that were wrecking their corner of the environment with impunity. Not only did most not know how to use the Web to get the word out about their efforts, but often they were scraping the bottom of the donation jar to run off a few flyers at Kinko’s. Small for-profit businesses weren’t faring much better, she’d discovered. Tiny mom-and-pop startups were getting $5000.00 quotes to build the simplest of web sites, and often the developers would be gone a month after the site launched, leaving them in the lurch when it came time to…
